China Painting, Porcelain Art or Porcelain Painting, was developed in China during the Ming Dynasty (1400 AD), using colors ground from different minerals. Today china paint is still made from finely ground minerals, used pure or in combination to produce a multitude of colors. The fine powder is mixed with oils to a consistency of tooth paste. The paint mixture is then thinned with another oil for smoother and easier color application. China paint never fully dries and can be wiped off of the painted piece until it has been kiln fired.
Usually a porcelain piece is painted in stages, using the white, glazed background for the whites and highlights of the painting, then enhancing values, shadows, shapes and detail in subsequent applications. Each of my pieces are painted and fired at least 3 times. After each painting session, the piece is fired in a kiln to temperatures ranging from 1240 degrees F to 1580 degrees F, depending on the mineral content of the paint applied. The firing process "fires off" the oil medium and softens the glaze coat allowing the the paint to bind with the top of the glaze coat, thus making it permanent.

The traditional subject matter of China Painting is fruit and flowers. Having always painted animals, it seemed natural to me to paint them on tiles and 3-dimentional porcelain pieces. I have found that china paint is great for textures such as fur, feathers and grass.
You will not find anything like my porcelain artwork anywhere else.
